Writing this blog on Cincinnati.MD has been a lot of fun. I've enjoyed the feedback from the readers and sharing what I've learned through exercise trainers, nutritionists, doctors, and friends and family. To all of you I say, thank you!
Today I'm writing about something very personal to me, cancer. My family has a very high rate of cancer. I've had a grandmother, grandfather, brother and my mother fighting this battle. My brother has overcome all the odds and has been battling Non Hotchkins Lymphoma for years. He did what he needed to do, without complaining, and is an inspiration for many.
My mother is in year 4 1/2 with lung cancer. Never would you have an opportunity to meet more of a 'lady' than she has been her whole life. She has endured years of radiation, and chemo. Her answer to her nausea, weakness in her body and generally feeling like crap, at age 82 is, "this too shall pass". She truly inspires me everyday.
I was searching our one click relief center yesterday and researching nutrition and cancer and found a very interesting article (see link above). It reminded me how cancer treatment's side effects are so disruptive on nutrition. Chemo and radiation make you feel so bad ( because they are basically poisons being administered into your system to attack the cancer cells), that eating anything doesn't seem very appealing, though the article reminds the reader that eating healthy, nutritional foods can help the patient feel better (though that concept is predicated on the fact that said patient can keep anything down!). It seems logical that the vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbs, fat and water are good for the patient, but often the vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and pain impede these good theories.
I'm not writing this to depress you all. Information is empowering. But I remind everyone how courageous these amazing fighters are. Looking this insidious disease in the face, and fighting back!
